Events News & Events : September 19: Nominations for BOD and Show Meeting
Posted by Alyssa on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 (07:00:08) (63 reads)

From Toni:
This month we have some club business to attend to, Nominations! As the rock year draws to a close we need to begin thinking about who is going to lead us in the coming year. Next month is all about the show so we need to start the nomination process in order to hold elections in November. The December meeting is our annual holiday potluck and we like to have it all wrapped up by that time.

Being on the Board of Directors can be a rewarding experience. Don't worry if you feel like you are too “green” to run for office. Many of the old timers are more than happy to help smooth the way. I will personally help coach the next Vice-President, for example. Your life experience is often enough to guide you and we are all united in our love for rocks. It does take commitment, but it can be as much or as little as you can contribute. We have a monthly Board meeting, the monthly educational meeting, and of course Board members are heavily involved in the annual show.

We will have job descriptions available at the meeting. Please make an effort to attend this meeting as it is your club and we need you!

As always the meeting is a pot luck. Please bring a dish to share. I have a nice selection of items for the prize drawing and the auction that you can't miss! I will be posting pictures soon, including a moss agate that is awesome!

See you Thursday!

Antonia Barry
Your Vice-President

Our monthly educational meeting will as usual start at 7pm. Click the link below for more details about the monthly meeting and the address and directions.

There is a potluck as usual followed by the Monthly Challenge, the live rockhound auction and more!

This is a great night to come and see what the club is like if you are thinking about joining SMS and if you like it, you can join right there! Hope to see everyone there! :)

Our Junior Rockhound/Pebble pup Meeting will start at 6pm!

From Glenda:
We will be doing a mineral identification game and talk about the display cases for the kids at our upcoming annual show!!

Events News & Events : August 15th Educational Meeting: How To Create a Display Case
Posted by Alyssa on Tuesday, August 06, 2019 (21:05:09) (115 reads)

This month the educational meeting will be “How To Create a Display Case” presented by Glenda Green and Toni Barry who will demonstrate how to use your personal collection to create a dazzling display. We will show you that whether you have an extensive collection, or just one fine piece, an eye catching display is easy and rewarding.

The club has upward of 25 cases for use by members and non-members alike. They have recently been painted and rewired with LED lighting. Volunteers will lug those monsters to the show and all you need to do is put your personal touch and pretty rocks inside. They are then closed and secured and ready for your beauties to be admired.

Our monthly educational meeting will as usual start at 7pm. Click the link below for more details about the monthly meeting and the address and directions.

From Glenda: On September 1st we will be heading up to Black Butte Lake Recreational Area to gather agates and
jaspers. In preparation for this field trip, our next meeting will be focused around Field trip preparedness and field trip safety, which is necessary for the Field Trip badge.

We will also have a brief presentation about famous gemstones as part of a continuation for earning the "Gemstone Lore & Legend" badge. Also you don't want to miss this meeting as we will have special prize drawings at the end – you can only earn tickets by attending!

Please bring a snack for the Kids Potluck after their activity has concluded!

From Glenda: This month we are going to learn about fluorescent and phosphorescent minerals! If you are wondering what those fancy words mean: Fluorescent means that it glows under Ultraviolet light.
